About Us
The Portuguese Brain Bank (PBB) was established in 2014, is based on the Neuropathology Unit, Department of Neurosciences of Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto, and has also the support of the Faculty of Medicine – Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences of University of Porto and the Medical School of the University of Minho.
The PBB collects and supplies human brain tissues for research nationally and internationally, already having around 70 brains from patients with different neurodegenerative and other neurological disorders. The formalin-fixed and/or frozen tissues are available for use in approved research. Researchers conduct studies on these brains to gain a greater understanding of these disorders, which helps create better treatments.
The PBB works closely with several hospitals in the region for the tissue donation program. Please visit our site Donor for information about joining the tissue donor scheme.
